As they say, there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing and if you're heading out onto the course in harsh weather, layering with the right gear is fundamental.
Layering various garments works perfectly for golf as it traps air between the clothing acting as an insulator without adding excessive bulk & if the sun does eventually break through, layers can also be easily removed keeping you comfortable throughout the day.
1. Base - Polo Shirt
Using a polo shirt that wicks away moisture will help regulate your body temperature as moisture against the skin can cool you down and make you feel clammy. The Dunbar and Leven are perfect to use as a base layer or to wear on their own on a hot day as they both have wicking properties & a UPF rating of 30, (level of coverage of the fabric giving better sun protection) Many golfers have taken to wearing long sleeve base layers with high necks under Polo shirts and zip necks which also offer that extra bit of warmth. Mashie is constantly looking to develop new products and are currently investigating fabrics we can use for our own long sleeve base layer. If you have any other products you would like Mashie to offer, please do let us know as we want to know from you what helps you play your best.
With mid layers we want to build up the warmth and add another layer of protection without restriction. At Mashie, we have developed the Stirling and Kerr mid layers. These super stretchy layers are very breathable whilst also featuring a water repellent coating keeping you dry even if you get caught out in those April showers. These have quickly proven to be one our best sellers however if you would like more of a classic mid layer, a merino wool jumper is a great alternative. Our range of knitwear is made of 100% Italian Merino Wool & this luxurious soft fabric has some very technical properties. Wool is a great natural insulator and regulates body temperature by absorbing water vapour and moving it away from the body where it evaporates. We have also added a water repellent coating to the Troon and Shetland styles giving extra protection from the elements.
3. Shell Layer
So you have the foundations of your outfit, a final layer to keep out the worst of the wind and the rain is all that is needed. Depending on the weather you expect to encounter, you have a few options with this layer. Something like our Roxburghe jacket is a great lightweight jacket you can roll up and have stored in your bag. Despite the thinness of the Italian polyester it is windproof, water repellent and durable. A short sleeve option like the Halkett will offer you more flexibility in your swing and is very popular with professionals for this reason. If you reckon you need more than just lightweight protection, a full waterproof suit is advisable. The main difference being that this outer layer is Water-proof, rather than just water-resistant. You may be tempted to buy a waterproof jacket based on it’s design or claims on waterproof levels alone. From our experience this does not necessarily mean the jacket is unrestrictive and can become an annoying distraction. The Brodick Jacket was designed with comfort at the top of our list of must-haves. The sleeves are ergonomically sewn meaning they are cut with a natural curve so there is less fabric where you don’t need it. The waterproof fabric contains spandex giving just enough stretch to give you freedom to move and have an unrestricted swing. Easily forgotten, but most essential, your trousers need to work just as hard as the rest of your outfit. We like our trousers to work in all weathers as this part of your outfit is not so easy to layer (unless you get the long johns out). Our Haskell trouser is perfect all year round as it is wind-proof and water-resistant for the winter months & is breathable and moisture wicking for the summer months.
Lastly, you really cannot underestimate the benefit of a hat when out on a blustery course. Cold ears can be a real pain so arm yourself with a beanie. Our thinsulate® lined beanies have been so popular this season and we can’t wait to create next years range of winter accessories.
